The Brandmahl Family’s records show that Jack’s grandfather is Charles Brandmahl, who was German in origin and was a cabinet maker. He was pious and always read the Bible before each meal and demanded silence while reading the Bible. Charles had a photographic memory and worked across the United States.

Brandmahl is also spelled "Brandmaehl" in earlier records. The short name for Charles is Carl, as per the German dictionary. Jack’s great-grandfather was referred to as Carl in land records and Charles in the census records. All his sisters are listed with married names.

I believe the picture was taken in the 1890s. Grandfather Dan had a fall-out with his father and left home when he was 17, as told by aunt Ethel and mother Jean.

Grandmother Anna lived in Louisa County, Virginia, on a dairy farm with her siblings. Jack does not know how she met grandfather Dan and believes there’s more to the story though he’s not sure except mother told me he was courting grandmother's sister, Susanna, first.

Dad, Charles Brandmahl, Sr., said that my grandfather met his wife, who had taken her vows to become a nun, and convinced her to marry him. The story goes that he had a photographic memory, worked in all the 48 states, drank quite a bit, tried prizefighting, and did much more, all of which has been included in my book, "Man in Hell."

The document entitled "Family Group Sheet," Chart Number 1, talks about Carl William Brandmaehl II, my great grandfather was born in 1838 in the Black Forest region Prussia, Germany and died in 1910 in Schenectady, New York. He was interred in Vail Cemetery. He was employed as a cabinet maker.

His second wife, Amehlia, Porsch, was born in 1845 in Werde, Dresden, Saxony, Germany, and died in 1924. It is documented that she immigrated to the United States when she was 18. She left Germany because she disliked Bismark and his Prussian plan for German unification under the Kaiser. Once in the United States, she was introduced to Carl by the minister of the German Methodist Church in Schenectady, New York.

The note also states that he built a house. He was very stern with a small-built and a long beard. He was very proud of his German heritage, said Grace. Before and after each meal, he demanded silence, and during his meal read Bible. One of his forebears was Swedish (Carlson). Carl was a well-known wheel-right cabinet maker and built the first wooden hook and ladder for the Schenectady fire department.
