WHY DO WE STUDY HEAVEN?

First of all, it is important to study Heaven because Christians believe that when we die, we’re going to Heaven.

If Heaven is where we will spend eternity, we’d like to have some idea as to what it will be like.

As evangelicals, the more we know of Heaven, the better we can explain the the glory of Heaven to others.

Why we’re alive on earth, we should be preparing ourselves to be worthy of the rewards that await us.

And fourthly, we study Heaven because Jesus, our Savior, is in Heaven in His resurrection body and it is from Heaven that we expect Him to return for us, His people.

I’m sure you have heard people say that Heaven is a mystery. A wonderful place, but not one we will know anything about until we get there. Then they recite 1 Corinthians 2:9, “No eye has seen, nor ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for us in Heaven.”

Randy Alcorn points out that the next verse, verse 10, tells us that there is much we can know through the Spirit of God. “10 these are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God.” Proves that there is much we can know about Heaven. The Spirit is the element in humanity, which gives us the ability to have an intimate relationship with God. Whenever the word “spirit” is used, it refers to the immaterial part of humanity that “connects” with God, who Himself is Spirit (John 4:24).

The Bible Believer’s Commentary supports Alcorn’s view. It states, “the human mind, left to itself, could never discover the wonderful mysteries which were made known at the beginning of the Gospel era. Human reason is totally inadequate to know the truth of God. It goes on to say the Spirit searches all things and imparts them to us.
